THE SCHOOL COUNSELING DEPARTMENT ASPIRES TO:
- Provide equal and developmentally appropriate opportunities for all personal and social development.

COURSE SELECTION
The course selection process begins in February for the following school year. At that time core course teachers will make recomendations regarding appropriate course work for the following school year, and students will choose elective options. More information will posted as the course selection window opens.
SCHEDULING
The scheduling window opens in June for the following school year. Students who have scheduling conflicts will be contacted by their Counselor. Schedules are typically available for view in PowerSchool mid-August. More information will be posted as the scheduling window opens.

Beginning in ninth grade, Wyomissing Area School District students are required to complete the graduation requirements set by the district and outlined in the Program of Studies. Additionally, all Pennsylvania public school students must fulfill the requirements of Act 158. Listed below are the details of both sets of requirements.
GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS - Graduation requirements are for subjects taken in grades 9, 10, 11, and 12. Wyomissing Area Jr./Sr. High students need 23 total credits to graduate. Courses taken in seventh and eighth grade do not accrue credit toward graduation. Beginning with the class of 2023, students must also take and pass end of course Keystone Exams in Biology, Algebra 1, and English Literature to fulfill their graduation requirements.

All teaching staff is available for additional academic support from 2:35PM to 3:05PM. Students are encouraged to make arrangements to meet with their teacher, based on their availability, to receive instructional assistance. Transportation is available for students who normally utilize school bus transportation.
Please contact your student's school counselor if you feel as though your student needs a higher level of tutoring support.

GRADING SCALE - Quarter grades in courses are earned according to the following scale:

FINAL GRADE IN A COURSE - Wyomissing Area Junior-Senior High School assigns higher weight to each succeeding marking period and semester exam as the school year unfolds; i.e., the second quarter is weighted more than the first quarter, the 3rd quarter, more than the 2nd, and the 4th, more than the 3rd.GPA & CLASS RANK - Unweighted GPA reflects the combined calculation of the final grades earned in all completed courses, regardless of course level.
Weighted GPA reflects the unweighted GPA plus the weight earned for honors and/or AP courses. AP courses receive a weighting of 0.25 if the final grade of A, B, or C is earned. Full year Honors courses receive a weighting of 0.2 if the final grade of an A or B is earned.
Class rank is a student's cumulative class standing based on weighted GPA from the end of 9th grade through 12th grade. Rank is computed at the end of each year and at mid-year for seniors to determine valedictorian and salutatorian.
REPORT CARDS - Families are encouraged to access and check PowerSchool on a regular basis to monitor academics. Students will receive their report cards in school with the expectation that they will take the responsibility of presenting them to their parents or guardians. Parents, therefore, need to make note of issue dates so that they can anticipate receiving this information from their child. See school calendar for dates for the end of quarters 1, 2, and 3. Final report cards will be mailed in June.

NAVIANCE IS OUR CAREER AND POST SECONDARY PLANNING SOFTWARE
All students are assigned a Naviance user name and password at the beginning of 7th grade. Parents are encouraged to familiarize themselves with their student's Naviance account.
- "Career Tab" - Research careers and take career interest inventories. Watch videos about careers (Roadtrip Nation).
- "Colleges Tab" - Research colleges through college searches, as well as view admissions statistics (both general and compared to Wyomissing graduates) using Scattergrams. View and register for upcoming college visits and research scholarship opportunites.
- "About Me Tab" - Access your GPA and ACT/SAT testing scores and build a resume.
- Documents Library - extensive amount of informational resources to assist students and parents with post-secondary planning, employment, volunteer and student enrichment opportunites.

PSAT
The PSAT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test) or National Merit Qualifying Exam is given to all sophomores and any junior who is interested. Please check with the guidance office for the administration date. Students who wish to take the PSAT should sign up in the counseling office and have cash or a check made out to Wyomissing Area Jr./Sr. High School. Scores will be returned to students at a later date during an assembly.Note: 11th graders should take the PSAT in the fall of their junior year whether or not they took it in 10th grade in order to qualify for the National Merit Qualifying Program.
Special Circumstances
If your student has an IEP or Chapter 15 plan that requires extended time for test-taking, and is in the appropriate grade for taking the PSAT's or SAT's, please contact your counselor about completing the documentation for extended time on these tests. Please note that the student must be using extended time throughout the year to qualify for extended time for the SATs. -
